Broadcasting Video Transmission

Broadcast video requires higher cannel rates for its highly animated nature. Standard TV broadcast uses MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 compression starts at 2Mbps and 6 Mbps in most cases.  Every SkySwitch modem supports up to 22 Mbps dedicated to a single channel with zero channel overhead.  Following features are uniquely offered to provide high quality video transmission:

  • High performance Turbo Product Code or LDPC to save amplifier power and bandwidth
  • High rate from 2Mbps and up to 22 Mbps from a single remote (no sharing among remotes)
  • High channel efficiency, no framing overhead

SkySwitch supports Live TV via IGMP multicast from any remote to multiple destinations.


Videoconference

Videoconference is a well supported application by SkySwitch® because FDMA based technology serves the application well. The reasons are:


Videoconference tends to be point-to-multipoint connections and multiple p-t-mp multicast FDMA carriers can often be transmitted simultaneously. 


Videoconference is high rate traffic, typically above 384 kbps.  Thus it is important to use VSAT platform based on efficient technology such as SkySwitch for reduced bandwidth utilization. 


Simultaneous videoconferencing among multiple remote points is possible by means of a Multiple Control Unit (MCU). This is a bridge that interconnects calls from several sources (in a similar way to the audio conference call). There are MCUs which are pure software, and others which are a combination of hardware and software.


SkySwitch® systems are capable of multipoint conferencing with no MCU, stand-alone, embedded or otherwise. Those use a standards-based H.323 technique known as "decentralized multipoint", where each station in a multipoint call exchanges video and audio directly with the other stations with no central "manager" or other bottleneck. The advantages of this technique are that the video and audio will generally be of higher quality because they don't have to be relayed through a central point. Also, users can make ad-hoc multipoint calls without any concern for the availability or control of an MCU. Because every station must transmit to every other station directly, this added convenience and quality, which is supported by SkySwitch without the expense of increased network bandwidth using multicasting capability.
